Our inner terrain also has this sense. These delicate sensors are in each cell and are called the mitochondria.
The mitochondria are each cells subtle, sensitive sensors that attune to conditions around them.
They sense stress and changes in their environment and serve to protect us from harm.
Imagine mitochondria as the cells batteries; they help power every cell. (From the brain to the heart, muscles, and all body organs.)
These small but mighty cell batteries are just like those of us EMPATH’S, and there are lots of them, between 500-2000 mitochondria in each cell!
They are the fundamental driver of energy.
Without mitochondria, we would have no power in the cell. On a basic level, mitochondria take the oxygen you breathe and the food you eat and create ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which power all our metabolic and cellular processes.
The key as a mitochondria empath is to understand how the signals your mitochondria receive from their environment signal the body to downregulate or uplevel energy.
Encounters with chemical triggers or toxins downregulate energy. Physical or biological assaults that exceed our body’s capacity for balance also create an energy deficit.
This downregulation is the body’s natural response to shift from energy-producing activities to conserving energy for healing and restoring.
Downregulation of mitochondria comes from what mitochondria researcher Dr. Robert Naviaux called the cell danger response.

This protective mechanism shifts our mitochondria’s role from energy-producing to defense mode resulting in symptoms of low energy, inflammation, brain fog, and poor mental and physical stamina.
For me, the cell danger response was triggered by years of overexercising, chronic inflammation, and heavy metal toxicity.
